FG Assures Of Stable Power Supply By October 2014

The Federal Government of Nigeria made a highly-controversial statement on August 29, 2014, Friday, promising to ensure stable power supply by October 2014. This has been contained in the statement by the Minister of Power Prof Chinedu Nebo, who declared at the State House, Abuja, while briefing the newsmen upon the termination of a meeting hosted by Vice President Namadi Sambo. The minister attributed the improvement to the fact of improved gas supply for Nigeria. He explained that repair and maintenance works at major facilities were coming to an end. Prof Nebo also informed that the FG was doing its best to ensure that the bills of power generating companies were paid promptly. “We hope that by the beginning of October, we will see a much better stabilisation of the entire power delivery system in the country.” The Minister of Power informed that the power generation had been averaging over 4,500MW. Extra reliability and stability are expected when about 300MW of spilling is included. In April 2014 this parameter exceeded 4,100MW. “We are advancing, we are making progress and we will continue to make progress,”the minister concluded. However, this declaration triggered mixed reactions. “Promises, promises, lies and more lies… What do we believe?”a former FCT Minister, Nasir El-Rufai, wondered in his post on Facebook. Olatunji Ibrahim supported the politician’s comment:“(It) is like if you are telling me to expect car to fly by October.” “There has ” been improvement in my area” some say. Where is your area? Aso Rock? Stop deceiving yourselves and think right. When will they stop all these promises and lies. We have grown up o!,”Ad Eries wrote from Lagos, expressing pessimism. However, some people on social media disagreed with these statements. Some of them recalled the times when El-Rufai used to be a minister and the situation was far from being perfect. “When you was FCT, what was ur archivement?”a Facebook user, Muhammed Obioha, asked. Others admitted that improvements are noticeable and expressed hope for better power supply in the upcoming months. Felix Orisewike Sylvanus was among those who confirmed it:“At least, I haven’t fuel my gen for the past four weeks because it has improved relatively.” What about your area?
